Fraxel® Laser

“Authentic Fraxel® Laser. Ask for it by name. Beware of imitations!”

In sunny Brisbane, most of us wish we could slow down the effects that ageing and sun damage have on our skin – and maybe even get a few years back in the process! Fraxel® is a proven laser technology that can reverse some of the signs of aging, helping you to look as young as you feel. With Fraxel, change isn’t drastic or scary – it’s you…..just better, with fresher, healthier and more youthful skin.

Fraxel® is the first and most respected name in laser rejuvenation, and Elysium Skin Centre is one of only two clinics in Brisbane using the authentic Fraxel laser. There are several types of Fraxel lasers available. We use the Fraxel Dual which incorporates both the 1550 and 1927 lasers, and we also have a fractional CO2 laser for resurfacing the skin. These 3 lasers can be used individually or together, giving Dr Csilla the flexibility to treat a wide range of skin concerns including:

  • skin ageing; thinning, lines and wrinkles
  • sun-damage; sunspots or actinic keratoses (a pre-cancerous condition)
  • skin pigmentation, freckles and age spots
  • acne scars, surgical scars and stretch marks
  • enlarged pores and uneven texture
  • general rejuvenation of the face, neck, décolletage, arms and hands.

Not all Fraxel treatments are the same. Dr Csilla is a laser specialist with more than 20 years’ experience in laser therapy. After a detailed consultation and assessment, Dr Csilla will prescribe a treatment program designed specifically for your skin condition, skin type, downtime requirements and budget.

Our two “Designer” Fraxel treatments:

“Platinum Fraxel”

Our Platinum Fraxel laser treatment is designed specifically for the discerning aesthetic patient who wants the very best results fast. The treatments are performed by Dr Csilla and include our premium skincare pack for post laser healing and five sessions of LED Light Therapy (LLT), valued at $550. LLT is performed in the days and weeks immediately after laser therapy and significantly reduces redness, swelling and healing times, improving the overall benefit of the treatment.

“Fraxel Plus” (Pulse and Peel)

This treatment combines Fraxel Laser and Intense Pulsed Light to significantly reduce abnormal facial pigmentation and freckling in just one session, in addition to improving fine lines and wrinkles. A gentle post-laser microdermabrasion and hydration treatment is also included to speed up the recovery process. Dr Csilla performs a Platinum version of this treatment with the added benefit of our premium skincare pack and post laser LED Light treatments.

FAQ’s

Fraxel treatments for sunspots (actinic keratoses).

Fraxel 1927 has gained the reputation for being THE LASER TREATMENT OF CHOICE for precancerous sunspots. Results are rapid with less downtime and an improved cosmetic outcome when compared to creams, cryotherapy, cautery and surgery.

With Fraxel Laser we can treat your entire face, scalp, arms and hands, and your skin will be completely healed within 5-14 days, depending on the site.
More than one treatment may be needed for best results but subsequent treatments may only require “spot” therapy.

These treatments are generally performed by Nurse Fay under Dr Csilla’s supervision.

How does Fraxel laser work?

Fraxel uses fractional technology to create microscopic columns of laser energy which penetrate a proportion (fraction) of the skin. This laser energy is absorbed by water molecules in the skin and converted to heat producing tiny areas of thermal coagulation called microscopic thermal zones (MTZ). These stimulate your own natural healing process, replacing old and damaged cells, scars and collagen with new healthy cells and remodeled collagen. Fraxel essentially kick-starts your own body to replace old skin with new.

The fractionated nature of the laser leaves areas of normal (uninjured) skin between the zones of thermal injury resulting in faster healing. The safety profile of the laser is also greatly improved, allowing treatment of many skin types including darker skin. The depth, coverage and intensity of the Fraxel laser are all controlled by Dr Csilla based on your specific needs and skin type.

Fraxel Dual has two wavelengths, 1550nm and 1927nm, each best suited to treating different skin concerns:

  • 1550 is deeply penetrating and is sometimes termed non-ablative fractional resurfacing of the skin. It is used for treating scars, stretch marks, lines and wrinkles, and improving skin tone.
  • 1927 is more superficial and concentrated at the skin surface. It is used for treating sun-damaged skin, sunspots, pigmentation, age spots, enlarged pores and fine lines.
  • Dr Csilla will often use both wavelengths together in the one treatment session as many patients have both superficial and deep damage.

Preparation for your Fraxel treatment

Preparing your skin for your Fraxel laser treatment will ensure that you get the best possible results. Dr Csilla recommends pre-treatment with a skincare regimen tailored to your skin type using an antioxidant cream for morning and a Vitamin A cream at night. In addition, medical microdermabrasion and chemical peels will also aid the laser response. For skin at risk of post-laser pigmentation problems, Dr Csilla will prescribe a lightening agent to use before and after the laser treatment.

What to expect during your Fraxel treatment.

You will arrive 1 hour before your laser appointment time to have a local anaesthetic cream applied to the treatment area to numb the skin and minimize discomfort. Most patients find that this is all they need for a comfortable treatment, however, nitrous oxide gas is also available for those requiring a little more assistance.

For more intense laser treatments we recommend the use of oral pain relief and a relaxant medication which is prescribed in the clinic, in addition to the topical anaesthetic cream. If this is required you will need a driver to take you home after the treatment.

Treatment times vary from 20 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on the area to be treated, intensity of treatment and any combined therapies that may be used at the same time. This will be discussed with you at the time of the consultation and planning your treatment protocol.

What to expect after your Fraxel treatment.

Following the Fraxel laser therapy your skin will look a sunburnt pink to red color, and there will be mild to moderate swelling for 1-4 days depending on your skin type and sensitivity, and the type and intensity of laser used. The surface of your skin will feel a little rough as tiny scabs form, which then peel off at day 3-4, with complete recovery (on the face) by day 5-7. Treatments on the neck, chest, arms and hands take longer to heal (10-14 days).

All of our Fraxel treatments include a skincare pack. You will need to wash the treated area twice a day with a gentle, soap-free cleanser and moisturize the skin multiple times through the day (at least 3-4 times) to help your skin to heal and make it feel more comfortable. You should avoid excess heat and sunlight for 7 days after treatment, and your exercise regime will be limited for 4-6 days depending on the type of Fraxel performed. Dr Csilla will give you a better understanding of the downtime and post-treatment care for your specific treatment.

Our “Platinum Fraxel” treatment packages include a premium skincare pack to use and a course of 5 LED Light Therapy (LLT) treatments. LLT is a quick 10-15 minute treatment which aids the healing process and speeds up recovery. It is performed in the days and weeks post laser treatment.

Dr Csilla also recommends the use of Oxygenetix healing foundation cream post laser to further aid the recovery process and camouflage the early laser effects. A good sunscreen is essential and Dr Csilla prefers the use of a physical blocker (zinc and titanium) rather than a chemical sunscreen. To maintain your new skin for as long as possible, Dr Csilla considers skincare and sun protection to be almost as important as the laser procedure itself.

Is Fraxel safe?

With a track record of over 800,000 treatments in the decade since Fraxel first pioneered true fractional technology, Fraxel laser is proven to be safe and effective for multiple indications.

All laser treatments should be prescribed and performed by a suitably trained and experienced laser clinician. At Elysium Skin Centre, all patients will be assessed by Dr Csilla. She also performs all of our Platinum Fraxel treatments designed specifically for aesthetic patients. Some of our treatments are performed by Nurse Fay (a qualified Fraxel laser practitioner) under Dr Csilla’s supervision.

Side effects of this laser, especially in experienced hands, are rare. As with any laser procedure, however, there is some potential for risk and downtime. Dr Csilla will discuss these with you at the time of consultation.

Potential complications of any laser treatment include:

  • Infection – Rare, less than 2%. If you have a history of cold sores you may be required to take oral anti-viral medication prior to and after the laser treatment. Dr Csilla must be notified should any cold sores erupt after the laser procedure.
  • Skin colour changes (lightening or darkening) – Rare in Caucasian skin types, and may be more commonly seen in darker skin patients including Asian skin types, but remains uncommon.
  • Scarring and keloid formation – A very rare complication of laser. It is more commonly seen on the chest and neck, and for this reason more conservative treatment energies are used in these regions.
  • Delayed healing and prolonged redness – Are rare in our hands. The neck, chest and arms routinely heal more slowly than the face.
  • Acne flare ups – Occur uncommonly and can be controlled with antibiotic cover prior to laser treatment

You may not be an appropriate candidate for laser therapy if you:

  • Are predisposed to keloid formation or excessive scarring;
  • Have experienced pigmentation changes following skin trauma, burns, cuts, surgery;
  • Are on systemic steroids (e.g. prednisone, dexamethasone);
  • Are undergoing isotretinoin acne treatment or are taking drugs in a similar class; or
  • Have a compromised immune system

What does Fraxel cost?

All patients have an initial consultation and assessment with Dr Csilla. The consultation fee is $100 and may be partially Medicare rebatable depending on the condition being treated.

The cost of each procedure is dependent upon the size of the area treated, the intensity of the treatment, and who performs the treatment.

Dr Csilla is a laser specialist with more than 20 years’ experience in laser therapy. She performs all of our “Platinum Fraxel” treatments for aesthetic patients.

Nurse Fay is a qualified Fraxel laser therapist who performs our “Fraxel Plus” treatments for irregular pigmentation as well as standard Fraxel treatments for sun damage and sunspots. These treatments are prescribed by, and performed under, Dr Csilla’s supervision and guidance.

Dr Csilla usually performs her treatments at a higher level of intensity to gain the maximum outcome. Many patients who have Fraxel therapy with Dr Csilla find that they gain significant benefit from just the one treatment session and do not require multiple treatments. If, however, Dr Csilla decides that you will benefit from multiple treatments, then pre-purchasing packages of 2 or 3 treatment sessions (to be used within a 12 month period) attract a 10 or 20% discount respectively on the total cost.

A comment on Low downtime procedures

The emphasis these days is on “low downtime” procedures. While I understand this desire, it is important to realise that increasing downtime tends to reflect a better outcome. The best results are usually achieved by more intense treatments, which by their nature are associated with more recovery time. Procedures associated with less downtime usually have less effect and need to be repeated more frequently to achieve the desired goal. In some cases these procedures will never achieve the outcome of a more intense treatment, no matter how often they are repeated. Dr Csilla will tailor the treatment to your needs but will only perform treatments which have proven efficacy. For those needing low downtime or no downtime procedures, we do have options including Laser Genesis, Ulthera and Secret RF micro-needling.

The final word on Fraxel by Dr Csilla

Fraxel laser is simply one of the safest and most reliable laser rejuvenation systems on the market. It fills the gap between entry-level laser treatments and high intensity, long downtime CO2 laser resurfacing. With Fraxel laser I can safely and effectively treat a variety of skin conditions such as freckling and pigmentation, age-spots, sun-damage, skin laxity, fine wrinkles and solar keratoses with as little as one treatment. I assess each and every patient, and tailor their treatment according to their skin type, skin concern and downtime requirements. I frequently combine Fraxel laser with CO2 laser, IPL and LLT in the one treatment session. This enables me to deliver far superior results than using just one treatment method alone.

My designer Fraxel Plus treatment is aimed specifically at removing facial pigmentation, while my Platinum Fraxel treatments are for discerning patients who want the very best results.
