What is Derma V laser and how does it work?

The Lutronic V is a high-powered laser system manufactured in the USA combining dual ultra-precise wavelengths in the one device. It utilises 532nm KTP and 1064nm Nd:YAG lasers to specifically target haemoglobin pigment (in red blood cells) and melanin pigment (in melanocytes and keratinocytes) at different depths in the skin.

For vascular lesions, the heat produced causes photocoagulation and ultimately destroys the abnormal vessels. For pigmented lesions, the laser light is absorbed by melanin pigment within the cells which then denature, rise to the surface and are shed, flaking off in one to two weeks.

What are the benefits of Derma V laser?

For many conditions, the treatment only takes a few minutes and will give you visible results within a few days. This laser improves the overall tone of your skin, clearing up red and brown blemishes. Your complexion will improve, unsightly veins are reduced or removed, and your skin will often have an improved texture and feel due to heat-related collagen stimulation. Vascular laser treatment can also assist in controlling chronic dermatoses like rosacea, and in treating unsightly pimples in active acne.

What should I expect during my Derma V laser procedure?

You will have an initial consultation with Dr Csilla or Nurse Fay. Pre-assessment of your skin starts with our Reveal ™ photography system, exposing the underlying sun damage (abnormal red and brown pigmentation) in the area to be treated.

On the day of treatment, protective eyewear is provided and clear gel is applied to the area to be treated. Anaesthesia is rarely needed for vascular laser treatments. The skin is pre-cooled prior to each laser “shot” by a chilled sapphire window on the laser device which reduces discomfort. It feels a little like a warm rubber band snapping on the skin, and any discomfort is brief. Ice packs and cool compresses are then applied to the treated area to settle any residual heat in the skin. After the procedure, sunscreen is applied to the area and makeup can be used to cover redness and dark spots post-treatment.

Most procedures only take 5 -10 minutes but some treatments may take up to 45 minutes.

How quickly will I see results?

Many conditions require just 1-3 treatments for significant results. Some lesions (eg. fine capillaries) show improvement instantly with only one treatment. Other lesions (eg. age spots) require several treatments. Some conditions (eg. leg veins) can require multiple treatments over a few months to show maximal improvement. A customised plan will be discussed with you during your consultation.

Treatment for pigmentation is done at 4 week intervals, and vascular problems are treated at 6 week intervals. Maintenance treatments may also be desired for the best effect.

How much does it cost?

The cost varies depending on the number of lesions, their size and the number shots or time needed to achieve the best response.

The minimum cost is $220 for a few spots. Otherwise the procedure is charged in time intervals. Please call the clinic for more information regarding pricing (Ph: 3214 1400)

Are there any side effects or complications?

Redness and swelling are expected effects after treatment with Derma V laser. This is usually not severe and will settle in 1 – 3 days. Ice and antihistamines can help.

Treated pigment spots darken over the next few days and are shed / flake off in 10 – 14 days.

Other less commonly expected effects may occur. Some of these should be reported to the clinic; your practitioner will advise:

  • Darkening of vessels (vessel turns from a red to blue line)
  • Bruising (usually small areas and not black)
  • Blisters or pronounced oedema (swelling)
  • Prolonged or persistent redness and swelling (more than a week)

Complications with Derma V laser treatment are rare and include:

  • Burn
  • Change in skin pigmentation (increased hyperpigmentation or reduced hypopigmentation)
  • Scarring, change in the texture of the skin
  • Thinning of the skin
  • Loss of hair
